This time of year we get barraged with a plethora of Christmas songs, some aren’t that annoying, and some are so very annoying that we’re already sick of them. So settle back and take at look at some songs that you have already heard far too much.
Gene Autry and Oakley Haldeman are responsible for creating the cringe inducing “Here Comes Santa Claus”. It’s not all their fault, it doesn’t help that everyone has made a cover of this song, from Elvis to the cast of Glee. So thank all of them for this song being drilled into your head every holiday season.
“Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” was written by Johnny Marks and performed by Brenda Lee in 1958. This song will be everywhere for the foreseeable future, it will follow you and when you least expect it it will be everywhere. Just make sure to avoid malls, doctor’s offices, dentist offices, offices in general, and every other place where music can be heard.
You can thank composers Joseph Beal and James Boothe for the holiday ruining “Jingle Bell Rock”. The song is annoying enough, but wait for that awkward relative to start dancing, then this becomes nightmare fuel. The classic version that we know and deplore is performed by Bobby Helms, who you may know from nothing else. He’s actually performed quite a few songs, but this is the only one you would know, thank goodness.
“White Christmas” was originally written by Irving Berlin in 1940, and then made famous by Bing Crosby in 1942. The song was featured in the Christmas film Holiday Inn, and since then it has become the best selling single of all time with 50+ million copies sold. All of this adds up to a song that just makes you want to punch your speakers.
“Feliz Navidad” was a Christmas song written and performed by José Feliciano. If you weren’t annoyed by this song already be prepared to listen to everyone you know try to sing along and then get muddled up and a once beautiful language. Since 1970 this has graced every corner of every retail location, you may think that it’s following you, but relax because it’s following everyone to their grave.
Professional jolly man Burl Ives breathed life into “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas”. This song first saw attention in 1965 when it was on the soundtrack for the classic stop-motion film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. This song was also written by Johnny Marks, who was also responsible for “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree”. Don’t forget that name because it will pop up again in this list.
“Rudulph the Red Nosed Reindeer” was initially a story, created by retailer Montgomery Ward, about a poor reindeer that was born with a birth defect and therefore the rest of the reindeer initially disliked him. The story was created by Robert L. May, now Mr. May just so happened to be related to the songwriter Johnny Marks. This Mr. Marks then went and wrote a song based on the story, he then went on to write every single Christmas song you’ll ever hate.
“Wonderful Christmas Time” is the most recent song on this list, it was written and produced by Sir Paul McCartney in 1979. The song may not have been annoying the first couple of times that you listened to it, but after that it immediately grates on your soul every time it’s heard. Paul McCartney wasn’t happy with ruining The Beatles, now he had to ruin Christmas, thanks Paul.
