8 Explosive Movie Volcanoes

On this day in 1997 Dante’s Peak was released. To celebrate its eruption into theaters we give you eight volcanoes in movies. Enjoy and watch out for the ash.

In Krakatoa, East of Java a ship is attempting to retrieve pearls from a shipwreck that is dangerously close to a volcano. Because in movies if you ever get anywhere close to a volcano it will most certainly erupt.

1997 was a banner year for movies about volcanoes. Dante’s Peak was the first to be released, and since it starred James Bond it was clearly the better film.

The other volcano movie to come out in 1997 was the aptly named Volcano. It was the Deep Impact to Dante’s Peak‘s Armageddon. Volcano wasn’t a great movie, but it had a great cast with Tommy Lee Jones in the lead.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King you get a good look at Mordor. Pretty terrifying if you’re a hobbit.

Supervolcano was released in 2005 on BBC One. It featured a potential eruption of the volcano laying dormant under Yellowstone National Park. The tag line said it all, “Scientists know it as the deadliest volcano on Earth. You know it … as Yellowstone.”

2012 was released in 2009, and was about the impending doom that threatened us all in 2012. In this film Yellowstone goes up as well, but this time it looked so much more expensive.

2012’s Wreck-It-Ralph featured a volcano of diet cola that was right below a deposit of Mentos. This premise is the scariest of all the volcano threats. Diet cola? No thanks.

After Earth may not have focused entirely on the volcano but it sure did look pretty cool. This was actually a chance for Jaden Smith to show everyone that he could act alongside such an imposing screen presence as a volcano.
