Nicolas Cage was already an established actor when he made Raising Arizona in 1987, although it was his first turn as a leading man. Check it out for Nicolas Cage but also the score is unbeatable.
In 1990 he starred in Wild At Heart as Sailor Ripley. His eccentric attitude fit as Sailor quite easily. This was his one collaboration with David Lynch and it made for a fantastically surreal flick.
Leaving Las Vegas has to be one of his best films. Nicolas Cage shines as the alcoholic Ben Sanderson, who goes to Las Vegas to drink himself to death. Not exactly the kind of vacation to Vegas we all would plan on.
1999 saw Mr. Cage in Martin Scorsese’s classic Bringing Out the Dead. Nic was able to inhabit his character, Frank Pierce, as he made his way through New York in an ambulance. Watch it for the camera work as they are winding through the streets at top speed.
Adaptation. has Nicolas Cage playing two roles, the brothers Charlie and Donald Kaufman. In this film he’s a writer, and his brother, that is attempting to write a script but has a mean case of writers block. This all leads to some serious shenanigans that involve Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper.
In Matchstick Men Nicolas Cage is a con-artist with a serious case of obsessive compulsive disorder with a dash of agoraphobia thrown in for good measure. The cast includes Sam Rockwell at the top of his game, but how couldn’t you be when you’re acting alongside one of the most prolific and talented actors of his generation.
From the writer/director of Gattaca comes Lord of War. In this flick Nic plays Yuri Orlov, a gun runner that does good … ish.
This sleeper of a film Kick-Ass didn’t really get the attention it deserved when it was initially released in theaters. Since then it’s gotten a small but dedicated cult following, mainly for Nicolas Cage’s role as Big Daddy. He helped make the movie awesome.
