As Just Cause 2 and soon Just Cause 3 have shown, sometimes those single-player only games could make some spectacularly fun multi-player.
Here are eight games that need a multi-player mode either officially or by modification.
Zelda (any of them)
It’s hard to find anyone who hasn’t played a Zelda title in their life. So I have to ask, wouldn’t it have been just a little more fun if you could play alongside a friend? It’s a Nintendo game after all. Almost every one of their titles, except Zelda is meant for at least two people. Link could have had a buddie that helped with quests on occasion, right?
Hitman
Hitman: Absolution had a kind of multi-player setup. A member of the community would make a contract that another would need to complete under the time allotted and conditions given. Imagine, instead of being the lone wolf after a target on a map, there were multiple assassin’s out to seek that same target and earn the reward?
Thief
Thief could easily have two fun types of multi-player. First, there could be a hide and seek mode where one person must seek out and find the others. The person who discovers the most opponents, wins. The second could be a trial system. Given it’s a Thief game, it could be about breaking into a specific building and whoever steals the most in terms of total value, wins. I’m sure a community could easily come up with several other ways of making a stealth multi-player game in this atmosphere work.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Deus Ex: Human Revolution multiplayer would be interesting given the augments that can be applied to your character. Just imagine as you play your upgrades aren’t just weapons, but abilities you can apply to your own character. Jumping higher, falling from great distances, ways to track your enemies, etc.. The possibilities are endless.
Batman: Arkham Knight
Batman: Arkham Knight could be the ultimate game of cops and robbers. One one side, you have Batman with all of his goodies and on the other, one of the super-villians and their unique abilities that could be used to thwart the Dark Knight from catching them.
Alien: Isolation
This one’s pretty much a given. One person hides and tries to stay alive as long as possible. The other is the Alien, hunting the human and getting off of the station.
Fallout 4
Fallout 4 already feels like you’re playing a multi-player game by yourself. So why not make it official? There’s plenty of content that could be explored with the help of another, or simply faction off and fight against each other trying to stay alive in the wasteland.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Every time I watch an episode of Game of Thrones it always gives me the urge to play Skyrim again. Maybe it’s because they’re so similar in atmosphere that it makes me feel more inclined to play in that setting. Whatever the case, when I think of Skyrim multi-player it’s either a co-op style type or if we go with a dedicated server, Just Cause 2 style. Imagine laying waste to others when flying a dragon or Fus-Ro-Dah’ing someone out of a castle to claim it as your own? Sure, Elder Scrolls has an MMO, but to me it never felt the same or as inclusive as the single-player RPGs have done.
