We love our mods here at The Escapist, and with all the attention on Star Wars: Battlefront, we thought it was time to point out some of our favorite Star Wars mods. Some of these mods may be for older games, but they’re all still worth checking out. As a bonus, the games they require are typically quite inexpensive, or in many cases, you likely own them already. Star Wars: Requiem (Sins of Solar Empire)
It should be no surprise that Sins of Solar Empire is fertile ground for Star Wars mods, and [em]Star Wars: Requiem is one of the best. It adds both the Rebels and the Empire to the game, and before you know it, you’re embroiled in armada-sized space battle with TIE Fighters, X-WIngs, and more zipping around. Add in Star Destroyers, Venator-class battlecruisers and other capital ships, and you an not only replay the battles from the movies, you can engage in full-scale space warfare of your own.

Troopers: Dawn of Destiny (Unreal Tournament 2004)
Instead of letting you play as the iconic heroes of the Star Wars universe, Troopers: Dawn of Destiny overhauls Unreal Tournament 2004 to put players into the role of a footsoldier for either the Rebels or the Empire. Regardless of which side you choose, you’ll get your hands on some authentically modeled blasters and rifles. The mod also includes something you might not expect: ship-flying segments. You can even play through the Death Star trench run.

First Strike (Battlefield 2142)
If you want to spend a little time playing a Star Wars game in a DICE title, the First Strike mod is right up your alley. It uses Battlefield 2142’s framework to build an awesomely accurate experience, including lots of familiar vehicles. Speeder bikes, AT-ST walkers, TIE fighters, X-WIngs, and more can all be piloted by the player. Best of all, the team is working on a standalone, Unreal engine driven, single-player version of First Strike that should enter alpha testing soon.

Thrawn’s Revenge: Imperial Civil War (Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption)
Thrawn’s Revenge: Imperial Civil War encompasses the time from Palpatine’s death at Endor until the Pellaeon-Gavrisom treaty was signed. It adds four major factions and several minor factions, an updated combat system and more to Star Wars: Empire at War. It replaces the tech tree from the base game with a new era-based system, and includes a number of galactic conquests, including the option to play a conquest in mutliplayer. If you want to take over the galaxy, Thrawn’s Revenge: Imperial Civil War is right up your alley.

The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2)
It might seem odd to include a Star Wars game in a list of Star Wars mods, but the effect of the Sith Lords Restored Content Mod is so transformative on Knights of the Old Republic 2, it’s worth pointing out. It fixes a number of bugus, adds a lot of additional cutscenes, and helps tie up the story much better than the base game did. If you want to see KOTOR 2 as close to originally intended as possible, this is the mod to check out.

Star Wars: Ascendancy (Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion)
Much like Thrawn’s Revenge: Imperial Civil War, Star Wars: Ascendancy picks up the Star Wars story after the death of Emperor Palpatine at Endor, only in Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. You can play as the New Republic or the Imperial Remnant as you try to conquer the galaxy. Each faction has unique ship rosters, tech trees, and more. Add in a redesigned UI, updated graphics, and overhauled and added gameplay mechanics, and you’ve got a mod with lots to recommend it. It’s still in beta, but it’s worth checking out now.

Star Wars: Warlords (Homeworld 2)
Star Wars: Warlords turns Homeworld 2 into a masterful Star Wars title. It features 80 unique ships, each with high-res textures and unique animations. You can even use the Death Star, as well as over 100 ships from the Star Wars universe. You can even choose between various eras and units. Most impressively, the mod team is working now to bring the mod into Homeworld Remastered.

Star Wars: Galactic Warfare (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a great game in its own right, and the Star Wars: Galactic Warfare mod just adds to the game’s value. It’s an interesting take on the material, as Call of Duty’s fast-paced gameplay mates surprisingly well with Star Wars. You can play in familiar locales, including Bespin, Mos Eisley, and more. The killstreaks and gadgets are even properly themed. There are a lot fewer servers than there used to be, but if you can find a place to play it, Galactic Warfare is one of the best [em]Star Wars mods.
