Shea Whigham joins S.H.I.E.L.D spin-off series as ultra-obscure Marvel character
With his HBO series Boardwalk Empire (in which he portrays the younger brother of star Steve Buscemi) coming to an end, actor Shea Whigham has already picked up his next big TV gig: Playing what has been described as the lead male role in Marvel’s hotly-anticipated series Agent Carter.
Whigham will portray Strategic Scientific Reserve Chief Roger Dooley, who is in charge of the division where Carter (Haley Atwell) and the other characters are based out of. Set several years after the WWII-era events of Captain America: The First Avenger, the show follows Carter as she navigates both her duties at SSR (where sexist views on the role of women in the workplace often relegates her to administrative/secretarial work) and her more proactive, action-oriented covert work on behalf of Howard Stark. The series is set to air its first season as a “bridge-series” between the Fall and Spring halves of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’s second season.
Of note: A Roger Dooley actually does exist as an extremely obscure minor character in the Marvel Universe of the comics. Appearing only once in 1985’s infamous Marvel Graphic Novel #18: The Sensational She-Hulk, Dooley is an unethical S.H.I.E.L.D Agent who captures and imprisons The She-Hulk under false pretenses in order to force her into submitting to a strip-search for his own amusement. His body is subsequently taken over by a race of evil, sentient cockroaches and destroyed when they use him to attack She-Hulk, who then foils their attempt to bring down the S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier. It was during these bizarre events that She-Hulk was exposed to radiation that temporarily rendered her unable to revert to her human form of Jennifer Walters (she didn’t really care.) Given the WWII-era setting and the lack (so far) of an existing She-Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it appears unlikely that Carter’s Agent Dooley will follow the same path here.
Agent Carter will air on ABC beginning in January of 2015.
