Tywin Lannister actor Charles Dance says HBO may be talking about bringing Game of Thrones to the big screen.
Update: HBO’s Mara Milialian has responded to our query with the following succinct statement: “There are no plans to do [Game of Thrones] movies.”
Original Story: If there’s one thing that HBO’s Game of Thrones television series has proven, it’s that TV audiences have an appetite for bloody, betrayal-laced fantasy that, up until now, has gone almost completely untapped. The obvious question, in turn, is whether or not movie audiences might be interested in the same thing. Sure, people will pay cash for epic romps through Middle Earth, but how well would the bloody lands of Westeros fair at the box office? If a recent interview with one of the show’s actors can be believed, it’s a question that Hollywood might be getting closer to answering.
Speaking about Game of Thrones recently, actor Charles Dance (a.k.a. Tywin Lannister) revealed that the people behind the scenes may be discussing bringing it to the big screen. “There’s talk of eventually trying to do a feature film, but I don’t know which of the storylines,” said Dance, speaking with The Daily Beast. “There’s so much to cram into a film.”
This, of course, runs contrary to recent statements from HBO which, earlier this year, indicated that there are “no conversations” going on about potentially expanding the show into a full-fledged film. HBO has yet to comment on the Dance’s statements. The Escapist, in turn, has reached out to the network to see if we could learn any additional information.
Even with Dance’s comments still unconfirmed however, we could definitely see reasons that HBO might consider investing in film offshoots. It’s no secret that the TV series is swiftly catching up with the still-incomplete A Song of Ice and Fire book series on which it’s based. It’s more than possible that a film (or two) could be used as a way to appease and distract fans if the show needs to take a break so series creator George R.R. Martin can finish the final two books.
