Indie fighter darling to be yet more appealing in new release.
This summer, Lab Zero’s Skullgirls will arrive on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita as Skullgirls 2nd Encore, and new features announced today make it the largest version yet.
For the first time, story modes will feature the cast of nearly fifty characters fully voice acted. New challenges will be added with specific battle conditions to meet, such as defeating multiple enemies or limiting the techniques players can use. A survival mode features an endless stream of enemies with health recovery between rounds based upon performance. And to help you get better at all of it, a new trials mode features a “button-by-button instructional system” to train players in basic and advanced combos.
The new features will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita releases, though Lab Zero will be looking at possibly releasing them as downloadable content for the PC version of Skullgirls Encore at a later date.
In addition to the new content, Skullgirls 2nd Encore will feature the full roster of 14 playable fighters (including all DLC characters) and will feature cross-play with Skullgirls Encore for PlayStation 3. A driver developed by Lab Zero will also allow PS3 fighting sticks to be used with 2nd Encore on PS4.
An independent 2D fighting game originally released in 2012 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, Skullgirls has had a difficult road. Despite the layoff of its entire development team, their subsequent reformation as a new studio, and distribution conflicts with Konami, the game still managed to survive thanks to a dedicated fan base and a highly successful crowdfunding campaign to expand the game with new characters in 2013.
