The Nintendo Switch may be abandoning the proprietary charging cables of the Wii U to adopt industry standard USB-C.
Here’s an interesting little tidbit for you, EB Games Australia briefly put up a listing for a “Nintendo Switch Extra Long 3M Charging Cable”. The really interesting thing is that the accompanying image seemed to show a simple USB-C cable. Technobuffalo saved a screengrab before EB took it down, which you can see to the right.
Nintendo has a history of using proprietary cables for their portable systems – everything from the GameBoy Advance SP right up until the New Nintendo 3DS. Last year there was even a bit of controversy when Nintendo did not include a charger with the New 3DS XL in order to keep costs down. The move from proprietary chargers to USB-C would definitely help in reducing the costs of the console.
This information has yet to be confirmed by Nintendo, however, as the company is refusing to comment on any Nintendo Switch information ahead of its January 12 presentation.
