Developer Firaxis and publisher 2K have announced Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a not-so-XCOM-style take on the franchise. It’s being led by Jake Solomon, a designer from XCOM Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2, but the game mechanics in this title are all new.
The game has a total of 13 playable heroes, taken from all sorts of teams across Marvel. So far, there have been several confirmed, including Blade, Captain American, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Magik, Nico Minoru, and Wolverine. Together, the heroes must stop Lilith, the Mother of Demons.
According to an interview with Polygon, Players will assume the role of The Hunter, who is a brand new original character designed for this game and is customizable. There are over 40 different superpowers available for the player to choose from that range from traditionally “good” powers like those of Captain America and “darker” ones like Ghost Rider’s.
Solomon also says that there are zero mechanics shared between XCOM and Midnight Suns. Firaxis plans on showing gameplay for the first time on September 1 at 2:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. PT.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns will launch in March 2022 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Those who sign up to get news and promotional marketing on the game’s official website will receive an exclusive Blade Nightstalker skin.
