By this point it is quite clear that Army of Thieves, the heist spin-off film from Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, isn’t trying to be anything too original. In case that was in doubt, the full official Army of Thieves trailer for the movie, which is coming to Netflix soon, dropped today and literally spells out just how cliche it all is. Maybe that’s a good thing.
While the movie builds out the Army of the Dead universe that Snyder and Netflix are creating, Army of Thieves is quite clearly its own little thing, taking place after the zombie breakout in Las Vegas but before the first film takes place. We’re going to learn the origin story of Dieter, played by Matthias Schweighöfer, who also directs. He’s discovered during a secret underground safe hacking event, which is totally something that actually happens in the real world, by an elite team of thieves who recruit him to break into the world’s three most secure vaults. Cliche ensues, but it could be fun cliche and hopefully ditches the self-seriousness that nearly all of Snyder’s works have. The Army of Thieves official trailer offers hope, at least.
Schweighöfer is joined in the film by Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan. The five of them make up the crack team of thieves who head out to break into the safes as two French police, played by Noémie Nakai and Jonathan Cohen, chase after them. In case the cliches weren’t layered enough, Dieter and Gwendoline (Emmanuel) even have romantic feelings for each other.
Army of Thieves will release on Netflix on October 29.
