What do you do when you create a massively successful viral television show? If you’re Netflix, you order a second season, of course. Squid Game writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed today that season 2 of the Korean series is indeed in the works with Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, returning for the second series.

“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!” Hwang told the Associated Press. “But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.”
That season 2 confirmation should be pretty exciting for basically the entirety of all humanity, as it seemed Squid Game was that popular over the past couple months. The series was the streamer’s biggest ever debut, with 111 million accounts watching the series over its first month. It has only now just dropped out of Netflix’s top 10 listings, a new record for a series. The show is about a game where competitors compete with each other in deadly children’s games in order to be relieved of crushing debt. Its ultra-violent content and socio-economic commentary on capitalist society seemed to strike a chord with the world at large.
It looks like Squid Game season 2 will be a continuation of the first, despite the fact that the premise is rife for the anthology style. Hwang confirmed that the main character, Seong Gi-hun, will return, stating, “I will promise you this: Gi-hun will come back. He will do something for the world.”
