As we all know, whenever we experience a sense of déjà vu, it is confirmation that we are living in the Matrix. The newest trailer for the upcoming The Matrix Resurrections plays off that famous déjà vu line from the original film, boldly pointing out that we seem to have done all of this before by directly comparing the previous films to this one.
As the trailer hints, something is not right in the world, and the ending we thought we knew from the original Matrix trilogy may not be an actual ending. Could Neo (Keanu Reeves) and the rest of our black leather-clad heroes have actually still been stuck in the Matrix the entire time? Maybe they chose to stay in it? Whatever is happening, it appears many old faces will be returning but looking quite different. There is, of course, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking on the role of a younger-looking Morpheus, but we also get a very brief glimpse of The Merovingian in the Matrix Resurrections Déjà Vu trailer, looking far more disheveled than the last time we saw him sitting next to Monica Bellucci.
Given that David Mitchell, author of the mind-bending Cloud Atlas, co-wrote the screenplay with director Lana Wachowski and Aleksandar Hemon, it’s pretty clear things are going to get even more cerebral this time around. Although, whether or not we’ll be treated to another cave rave is anyone’s guess. The film also stars Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lambert Wilson, Daniel Bernhardt, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Christina Ricci, and Jonathan Groff.
The Matrix Resurrections will release in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.
