Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is getting a sequel with Destin Daniel Cretton returning as Shang-Chi 2 director and also writer. The announcement comes as part of a multi-year exclusive deal Cretton has signed with Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective that will also see him work on TV projects, including an unspecified Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Disney+ production already in development. His work with each company will focus on giving much-needed attention to underrepresented cultures and communities.
Details on each of the projects are being kept under wraps, of course, so it’s hard to say when we can even expect to see Shang-Chi 2 hit theaters. However, Marvel Studios president and MCU mastermind Kevin Feige offered a comment on Cretton’s return to the company’s ever-expanding superhero universe: “Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings debuted to audiences in September and generated $224.5 million domestically despite the pandemic. A sequel seemed pretty likely, but today offered the concrete confirmation that Shang-Chi 2 is happening and Destin Daniel Cretton is back.
Cretton spoke on working with Onyx Collective president Tara Duncan and the rest of the team at Marvel: “Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories and build new worlds with this community.”
While we wait for more on Shang-Chi 2, the MCU will continue with additional episodes of Hawkeye coming to Disney+ throughout the month. Then later this month, moviegoers will get to see the return of Tom Holland (and hopefully other Spider-Men) in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
