Jason Momoa is in final negotiations to star in a live-action Minecraft movie, per THR, and Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess is attached to direct it. Mary Parent, Roy Lee, and (posthumously credited) Jill Messick are producers, and Lydia Winters and Vu Bui of Mojang Studios are also producers. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts are attached as executive producers.
Some may rightfully wonder what a live-action Minecraft movie is even supposed to look like, with or without Jason Momoa holding a pickaxe. We do not have an answer to that question yet. We also do not have any details about the story. Mojang has been floating potential concepts for a movie for closer to a decade now, with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney attached at one point. Prior to that, Free Guy director Shawn Levy had been attached. Each new creative team has essentially brought a new vision for the film. Hopefully Jared Hess is bringing a great vision to the project.
The live-action Minecraft movie does not seem to have a revised release window yet, but it comes on the heels of a wave of unusually successful video games. These include Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the aforementioned Free Guy. A Super Mario movie is also in the works at Illumination, with Chris Pratt inexplicably starring.
