Marvel and developer Second Dinner have announced Marvel Snap, a digital, free-to-play collectible card game for PC and mobile devices. Second Dinner was founded by Ben Brode, the former director of Hearthstone, who introduced Marvel Snap in a 7-minute video today and revealed that it has been in development for the past four years. Chief Production Officer Yong Woo explained that the game is designed to strip out “all the stuff that gets in the way of fun and gets everybody straight into the strategic action.”
Toward that end, any given game will only last around three minutes, and a player deck only consists of 12 cards. Both players play their cards simultaneously, which sounds like it will create a frantic pace of play, yet Second Dinner insists it will all feel strategic. There is a ranked mode where you are battling other characters for Cosmic Cubes, and if you feel like you are going to win, you can “Snap” as part of a risk/reward mechanism to earn more from victory. How exactly it works isn’t yet clear though. Likewise, a game somehow plays out across three locations, and you have to win in two out of the three to win the match.
As expected, all Marvel Snap cards have unique individual effects, but there are also variant versions of cards with different art styles, such as a pixel art style. There will be more than 150 base cards to collect at launch, with more cards arriving every month afterward, and they can all be collected without spending money. (Surely spending money will help though.)
Starting today, you can sign up to be part of a closed beta for Marvel Snap on Android, if you live in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, or New Zealand. Notably, progress made in the beta will not be deleted later. Although, there is no hard release date for the game yet.
However, this is not the biggest Marvel news of the day — Daredevil is getting a new Disney+ series.
