The Sandman is one of the most revered comic book series ever written, and Netflix has finally revealed the release date trailer for its live-action TV adaptation of the Neil Gaiman masterpiece. The Sandman has a release date of August 5, 2022, and the first season will reportedly include 10 episodes. Gaiman has been heavily involved the series, even tweaking slight lines of dialogue to ensure everything that comes out of the mouth of the main character, Morpheus / Dream, is authentic. Perhaps this will allow it to avoid the curse of poor live-action Netflix adaptations, such as what befell Cowboy Bebop.
If you have never read The Sandman before, I’m just going to let Netflix tell you what it’s about:
There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep β a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes heβs made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities β both cosmic and human β along the way.
Suffice to say, it’s a trippy story, but it’s steeped in nuance, provocative imagery, and literary flourishes. However, unlike the original comics, which were largely set in the then-contemporary 1980s and 1990s, the live-action series will take place in the modern day. It’s a practical change. Although, if schlock is more your speed, Resident Evil is busy delivering horror camp to Netflix with its own new TV series trailer.
