Joker was definitely a movie that happened, and after watching it we could all say that we had definitely watched a movie about something. That something was so profound that it made a lot of money, and of course, that means that a Joker 2 was semi-confirmed almost right off the bat, but now that sequel is definitely happening as the film’s director, Todd Phillips, shared a photo of the finished script for the sequel, currently titled Joker: Folie à deux.
Yes, just as you thought Joker couldn’t get any more pretentious, they go ahead and give the sequel a French title. A folie à deux is a mental disorder that affects two or more people, a kind of shared delusion. Given the fact that Batman was set up at the end of Joker with the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents during the Joker-led riot in Gotham, could the sequel’s title refer to a sort of shared delusion of good versus evil between the two? That would necessitate quite the time jump and possibly yet another actor playing Batman, but who knows?
Phillips wrote the Joker 2 script with Scott Silver, who also collaborated on the first film, and they have been working on the sequel since the last one grossed over $1 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Joaquin Phoenix will be returning to the role of Joker, for which he was nominated for an Oscar, as is evidenced by the second photo in the post of the actor reading the screenplay.
