If there was any fear that Stranger Things would be losing steam in its old age, the fantastic season 4 has pretty much obliterated it and left us salivating for the final season and — dare we hope — a good spin-off. Creators the Duffer Brothers had teased the possibility of a spin-off back in February, but just what it is going to be about is still a mystery. However, thanks to a recent podcast interview (via Variety) with the Duffers, we now know their idea for the Stranger Things spin-off series is “1000% different” and would apparently not have anything to do with the current cast of characters.
“It’s not following… I’ve read these rumors that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff or that it’s another number,” the Duffer Brothers said. “That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”
While we also learned today that Stranger Things 5 is essentially returning to the show’s roots, it’s clear that this spin-off will go in a whole new direction with something different. There will be no main characters repeated, and the connective tissue is said to be “storytelling sensibility,” which is probably the best way to do something like this. The Duffers have a story plan for the existing characters, and it has an ending. Hell, Netflix apparently doesn’t even know what the spin-off is about or who will be running it, as the Duffer Bros. are planning to move on to other things after developing the series.
“Hopefully we find that right person to pass the baton to while we go on to do new stuff,” the Duffer Brothers said.
Clearly, if the new series is that different, then we’ll be heading to the town of Rawkins, where we’ll meet a strange boy called Twelve from the Rightside Up. We’ll let you know when this prediction becomes true.
