Ready to see some famous people look at the camera in slow motion while striking poses that remind you of a group of cosplayers staging a photo? Then you’re ready for our first look at the upcoming Dungeon & Dragons movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The look comes from a booth at San Diego Comic-Con, where a poster-sized screen is displaying the main cast in all its costumed glory, and some intrepid fan recorded it for us all to see. [Update: The movie trailer is now available.]
Despite the cheesy look we see in the video, Paramount and Hasbro are going full bore into this film, hoping to roll a 20 and kick off a brand new fantasy franchise based on the popular tabletop game. The studio is putting a chunk of money behind the Dungeons & Dragons movie, and as you can see from the first look, it has pulled together a big-name cast of actors to wear those fanciful costumes.
That cast includes Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez as the film’s main heroes. Supporting them in whatever dungeony and dragony action that may occur are Rege-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Chloe Coleman, and Sophia Lillis. Finally, Hugh Grant will play the film’s villain and guy who likes to rock an ascot. While roles haven’t been officially announced yet, we can kind of tell what everyone will be doing from their garb and the little symbol next to their name. For instance, it appears that Pine will be a bard and Rodriguez a warrior.

There isn’t much more detail on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is directed and co-written by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. However, the title does seem to suggest a classic D&D setup in which a ragtag group of adventurers are tasked with pulling off a heist or other crime but eventually end up saving the entire world. Anyone looking for something a bit more complex out of their D&D movie probably will be disappointed, but adhering to tropes, especially the tropes you helped define, isn’t always a bad thing.
We’re sure to get more information soon on the film as SDCC rolls along. And don’t forget, there is also a D&D TV show in the works.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will release on March 3, 2023.
