It’s been difficult to unlock the secret to a screen adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s 2009 comic book Locke & Key, but Netflix seems to have finally done it and we’ve got the first trailer to prove it. Strap in — there is some mystery and magic about to abound.
The 10 episodes will follow the three Locke siblings and their mother after they move into the ancestral home of their recently deceased father, who died under mysterious circumstances. (The YouTube description outright says he was murdered.) In that home, they find magical keys that open doors to a variety of things and powers. However, there’s also a demon that wants to steal their newfound powers from them. Just what the keys are, who this demon is, and how they’re connected to the children’s father are a big mystery, but this trailer definitely shows off plenty of fantastical and slightly horrific outcomes. It’s clear that Netflix is hoping for another childhood adventure hit like Stranger Things.
What’s not clear is if they’ll succeed at it. Locke & Key has been tossed around for nearly a decade. Fox made a pilot for the show shortly after the comic came out, but that didn’t take off. Then there was an attempt to make a film trilogy out of them. Then many years later, Hulu attempted to get a series going. That too floundered. Now Netflix has it and they’ve finally brought it to the screen.
The show stars Darby Stanchfield (Scandal) as Nina Locke, Jackson Robert Scott (It) as Bode Locke, Connor Jessup (American Crime) as Tyler Locke, Emilia Jones (Horrible Histories) as Kinsey Locke, Bill Heck (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs) as Rendell Locke, Laysla de Oliveira as Dodge, Sherri Saum as Ellie Whedon, Thomas Mitchell Barnet as Sam Lesser, Griffin Gluck (American Vandal) as Gabe, and Coby Bird as Rufus Whedon.
Locke & Key premieres on Feb. 7, 2020.
