Right before the ComicCon@Home panel for Bill & Ted Face the Music on Saturday, the film has dropped a new trailer, but that trailer isn’t the biggest news. The movie will be moving to a dual release, landing both in homes digitally and in theaters on Sept. 1. That is another new release date for the film, as the movie was previously scheduled to come out on Aug. 28.
First, the new trailer. This is by far the best look we’ve had at the film, which sees Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return to the titular roles of Ted “Theodore” Logan and William “Bill” S. Preston Esq., in order to finally write the song that will unite humanity and lead to the ’80s-tastic future we saw in the original film. Along for the ride this time are their two daughters (Samara Weaving and Brigette Lundy-Paine), whom we get our first good look at here and seem to be basically female versions of their fathers. The pair will be revisiting plenty of scenarios from the previous two films, including meeting themselves, traveling to hell, and collecting a bunch of old dead people to create music.
The rescheduled release date and simultaneous home and theatrical releases are another sign of the theater industry in no way being ready to open up again and fears by Hollywood that this will last well through August as COVID-19 continues to increase in the U.S. Bill & Ted Face the Music seems perfectly suited for this kind of release given its nostalgic following and lower budget. The film’s delay to a Tuesday lines it up better with at-home release schedules instead of theaters’ normal Friday releases, and given that even by the end of August it’s unlikely we’ll have full theatrical openings across the U.S., it’s a good idea to lean towards digital.
