We’re into the second half of the year and still no theaters open, so that means our best films are still coming from Netflix. It’s just dropped the trailer for its next prestige release, historical thriller The Devil All the Time starring Tom Holland, and it looks like a powerhouse. The film comes from director Antonio Campos and was written by him and Paulo Campos, adapting the book of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock.
The movie takes place over a stretch of time from post-World War II to the Vietnam War as orphan Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) confronts a myriad of evils in his small town of Knockemstiff, Ohio. These include an unholy preacher (future Batman Robert Pattinson), a twisted couple (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), and a crooked sheriff (Sebastian Stan). With a little bit of revenge thriller and a whole lot of chewing scenery in the trailer above, it looks absolutely fantastic. The novel it’s based on is insanely tense throughout, so hopefully the film can transfer some of that over.
If anyone can do that, it’s Campos. His entire career is pretty much nothing but tense thrillers like Christine and Simon Killer. He’s also directed a few episodes of The Sinner and one episode of The Punisher. Basically, his entire career has been leading to this movie. He’s got the cast to pull it off as well. Alongside the massive names above, the film features Bill Skarsgård, Mia Wasikowska, Harry Melling, Haley Bennett, and musician Pokey LaFarge.
The Devil All the Time will release on Netflix on Sept. 16.
