You probably think that you’ve heard Nicolas Cage swear enough in your life, but after watching the first two seconds of the new trailer for History of Swear Words, hosted by the man himself, you’ll realize you need a whole lot more. Just please make sure you’re not watching with the volume up at work or around children.
After the History of Swear Words trailer’s initial Caginess, the show actually starts looking like something that is both fun and informative. The six-episode series will dive into a different swear word each 20-minute episode, unpacking its history, where it comes from, and what it means now all while exploring just why we swear and what it means. The show will look at (and this is how Netflix is spelling them in their press release) “F**k,” “Sh*t,” “B*tch,” “D**k,” “Pu**y,” and “Damn.” We’ll have to assume that’s fuck and not fork.
Celebrity guest stars include Joel Kim Booster, DeRay Davis, Open Mike Eagle, Nikki Glaser, Patti Harrison, London Hughes, Jim Jefferies, Zainab Johnson, Nick Offerman, Sarah Silverman, Baron Vaughn, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. There is also a host of cussing experts, including Benjamin Bergen (PhD, Cognitive Scientist, Author of What The F), Mireille Miller-Young (PhD, Professor of Feminist Studies), Elvis Mitchell (Film Critic/Host of The Treatment on KCRW), Melissa Mohr (PhD, Author of Holy Sh*t: A Brief History of Swearing), and Kory Stamper (Lexicographer, Author Of Word By Word).
History of Swear Words with Nicolas Cage drops on Jan. 5, 2021, on Netflix.
