The blockbusters are finally coming. Well, at least the Warner Bros. blockbusters. As the studio has committed to simultaneously releasing its films in theaters and on HBO Max, it means we probably won’t see any of them rescheduled and we can finally start getting more trailers. First up after its release date was moved forward: the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer.
The film is directed by Adam Wingard, who made the stellar You’re Next but also the terrible Blair Witch remake, in his first attempt at leading a major blockbuster. It continues on the kaiju universe of movies that Legendary and WB have set up, all kicking off with Godzilla and expanded upon in Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In the universe, a mysterious organization called Monarch monitors and studies the giant monsters that were buried beneath the earth and that recently escaped to do battle with each other. This time it looks like Kong and Godzilla won’t be too friendly, despite both being the good guys in their respective films.
The trailer is basically one long battle sequence between Kong and Godzilla while a bunch of humans argue over which one of the monsters is good, if either of them is. Hopefully, the movie will be much the same as these films tend to suffer when the big monsters aren’t the focal point of the film. The official plot synopsis says that some of the humans are looking to pit the pair together hoping that they’ll kill each other and end the reign of the monsters. There’s definitely plenty of amazing eye candy in there, including Kong with an ax, Godzilla dominating some aircraft carriers, and a fantastic musical cue as the two start duking it out.
The movie stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, and Jessica Henwick. Godzilla vs. Kong will release in theaters and on HBO Max on March 26.
