The coming year has some seriously good movies to look forward to. So we’re giving you just eight upcoming movies that deserve your attention. These movies aren’t coming out for a while so you’ve got some time to go and get your tickets, no rush.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is a no-brainer, everyone and their brother is looking forward to this film, after the smashing success of the initial film they really had no choice but to make this movie. The cast will be returning, I’m sure they didn’t really have a choice as Marvel/Disney owns them for the foreseeable future. Head out to the theater to watch them destroy another American city, maybe this time they’ll have a taste for something other than shawarma after the battle.
Blackhat is the 2015 film that will be making hacking look like a video game. Thor stars in this film about a hacker being conscripted by the government to hunt down a very series cyber criminal, and of course Thor is the hacker that can get the job done. The upside to all of this is that the film is being helmed by Michael Mann, who has also given us great films like 2004’s Collateral and 1986’s Manhunter, so it can’t be that bad of a film.
From the director of District 9 and Elysium, Neill Blomkamp, comes this amazing looking flick Chappie. This film is about an abnormally talented robot named Chappie. Sharlto Copley plays Chappie (for the motion capture, think Gollum but a robot), this marks the third time that he and Neill Blomkamp have worked together. So if you’re a fan of science fiction, or of Neill Blomkamp than you need to go see this.
Ex Machina comes to us from Alex Garland, writer and director of the project. This is the first film that he’ll be directing, but when it comes to writing he’s a veteran, his previous writing credits include 28 Days Later …, Sunshine, and Dredd, so he seems up to the job. Ex Machina is about a human programmer that has been tasked with evaluating an A.I. and seeing just how human it seems. Think a fancy schmancy Blade Runner maybe, at least it sounds like that’s a possibility.
The people that brought you The Matrix and Cloud Atlas bring us Jupiter Ascending in 2015. This film looks like the perfect mix of sci-fi and fantasy. The film takes place in the future when a poor young woman is targeted by the Queen of the Universe. So from the description it’s basically a retelling of Flash Gordon but with Jupiter Jones rather than the lantern jawed hero.
Kingsman: The Secret Service looks to be another wildly successful adaptation of a comic book. This film got its start in the pages of The Secret Service by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar. Thankfully for all of us the director and co-writer of the project is none other than Matthew Vaughn, who brought Kick Ass and X-Men: First Class to life so we’re sure that he won’t drop the ball and deliver a fantastically crafted film that straddles reality with a comic book sensibility.
Tom Hardy stars as both of the Kray twins in the upcoming Legend. This flick centers around the twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray, two men who terrorized London through the 50s and 60s. In 1990 they had already made a movie about the terrible twins, but unfortunately the actors that they got for the leads, Martin and Gary Kemp of the band Spandau Ballet, were more like musicians trying to be actors than actual actors. Considering that Tom Hardy is at the top of his game right now this promises to be well worth your time.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 is something that is going to exist. We thought that after the first one we were done with this crap, but we would be wrong. Thankfully for Adam Sandler, one of the producers on the film, we’re in for another piece of unadulterated shit. But just think that there are at least seven other films that are coming out this year that are more worthy of your time and money than Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Although if you’re a fan of throwing away your time and money then get in line for this now.
