8 Pokemon Go Players Who Deserve a Darwin Award

Pokemon Go is seemingly installed on anyone with a phone. It has reached 50 million installs in just under 20 days and additions to the game are in the works. With that many people playing, there are bound to be a few silly stories crop up of what people will do to “catch’em all”.

Pokemon Go seems to make people lose all sense of reality and common sense as they’re glued to their phones trying to track down the next Pokemon to throw balls at. Here are eight stories of what happens when you try so hard to catch one, you end up as a candidate to win a Darwin Award.

Minor note: Our system doesn’t allow the use of the letter e with an acute to accurately type ‘Pokemon’ with one.

Teenager hit by car blames ‘Pokemon Go’

A young lady, Autumn Deiseroth, located a Pokemon at a nearby museum. The dilemma? It was across a busy four-lane road. Common sense would tell you “okay, let me find an intersection or other crosswalk where I can safely cross this road at”, but not her! She decided that this Pokemon had to be hers and went forth into the road. As she crossed the road she was struck by a vehicle, luckily suffering only minor injuries. The best part is she and her mother both blame the game for her lack of judgement.

“To where it is set up, we have to cross roads to go get it. I do, blame it” Deiseroth said.

One would think that playing a game on your phone and driving would be a bad idea. Well, not this guy! While he was on the hunt for his digital pet, he struck a very real police car. Luckily, no one was hurt, except his pride and wrists, I’m assuming after he was arrested.

In another story of why you shouldn’t play this game while driving, in Auburn, a man was distracted by playing Pokemon Go and crashed into a tree. Lucky for him, the Police omitted his name from the press release and he didn’t suffer any serious injuries. But I’m sure he’ll remember that he crashed into a stationary object through no fault but his own lack of sense.

Police arrest Brewer woman accused of Pokemon Go-related hit-and-run

So far, we’ve seen what happens when you’re so distracted by the game that you bring harm to yourself. In this story, the cause was a woman by the name of Jeannie Chapman who had a bout of road rage and rammed her car into a man who was on the hunt with his friends. According to the story, they didn’t move fast enough across the street and her patience wore out when she decided to back up about 20 feet then hit the gas and hitting one of the pedestrians that exchanged words with her beforehand.

Even if you’re not a fan of the game or find it irritating, don’t be a dick and drive your car into them.

If you’re on the hunt for Pokemon and it’s late in the evening or the wee hours of the morning, it’s probably safe to say you shouldn’t venture onto someone else’s property looking for the digital creatures. In this case, two teenagers in Florida were shot at by a resident believing them to be robbers when in fact they were simply trying to steal a few Pokemon. While it’s innocent enough to catch these critters, you shouldn’t violate the law in order to capture them.
