Square Enix has announced that a remastered version of Final Fantasy will be released on June 26 exclusively for the PSP, while a Final Fantasy II remake will follow on July 24.
Both games have been remade numerous times over the years, most recently in Final Fantasy 1 & 2: Dawn of Souls for the Gameboy Advance.
The Final Fantasy series is one of the most well-regarded console RPG series ever produced. From its initial release on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, there have been versions released on 28 different platforms, and it has spawned two CGI movies and 29 music soundtracks.
Square Enix has called these releases “anniversary editions,” and indicated they will contain new content such as updated graphics, new dungeons and character art, and a 16:9 widescreen presentation.
“It is amazing to see how far Final Fantasy has come in the past twenty years,” said Executive Producer Shinji Hashimoto, “and we cannot wait to continue bringing fans more Final Fantasy titles in the next twenty years.”
