Prior to the E3 news-fest, Sony has confirmed that its PlayStation 3 lineup will receive a price cut and the introduction of a new product.

Sony has confirmed what many publications had been speculating and retailers were hinting at for the past week; the PlayStation 3 price has been reconfigured. As of August, the 80 gigabyte PlayStation 3 unit, which has been available exclusively in Korea for a couple of months, will be priced at $599 while the existing 60 gigabyte version will dropped to $499. Included with the new 80 gigabyte SKU is Motorstorm, the off-road racing title that is popular on the PlayStation Network. This news only pertains to North America.

Jack Tretton, president and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment America, commented, “As we move into the next phase of PS3, it’s important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered. The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold.”
