Funcom has signed a deal with The Witcher publisher CD Projekt to create a fully-localized Polish version of its upcoming Cimmerian MMOG, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

CD Projekt will be responsible for localizing both voice and text in the game, and will also handle customer service, player communities, website creation and in-game support for Poland. The effort marks the first time a subscription-based MMOG has been fully localized into the Polish language.

“It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we are announcing this partnership, one that proves to be yet another milestone for our company – releasing the first subscription MMORPG fully localized into Polish,” said CD Projekt joint-CE Michał Kiciński. “We are committed to providing a new level of game support through the use of local game masters, community manager and customer support. For years we have waited for the right MMO game to come along and now it is here, in our hands.”

“CD Projekt has an impressive track record both as a developer and distributor, and they have done excellent localization and distribution work on other Funcom titles such as The Longest Journey,” added Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. “Escalating our collaboration to a whole new level is something we truly look forward to.”

“We believe a key aspect in making Age of Conan successful around Europe is to work closely with great local partners such as CD Projekt,” he continued. “In many countries it is essential to release in the local language to truly succeed, and Poland is definitively such a territory. CD Projekt is through its agreement with Eidos the chosen partner for retail distribution, sales and marketing in Poland so it’s a perfect match. Together we aim to make Age of Conan a great local success.”

Founded in 1994, CD Projekt has localized numerous high-profile roleplaying games for Polish audiences, including the Baldur’s Gate series, Planescape: Torment and the Icewind Dale games, but is best known to North American gamers as the company behind The Witcher, the hit 2007 RPG based on the short stories and novels written by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski. Funcom’s Age of Conan is currently set for release on May 20 in North America and May 23 in Europe. A release date for the localized Polish version has not been announced.
