CCP Announces EVE Fanfest 2008

CCP has confirmed the date for this year’s EVE Fanfest, a chance for EVE Online fans around the world to gather and celebrate the continued success of one of gaming’s most successful MMOGs.

EVE Fanfest 2008 will take place from November 6-8 at Laugardalur, in the heart of the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik. CCP is currently offering three “Early Bird” packages in conjunction with Icelandair, from Germany (expires June 15), Holland and the U.S., while packages from other countries are being put together and will be announced in the future. Last year’s EVE Fanfest 2007 was the largest ever, with nearly 1500 people showing up for a three-day party that included tournaments, presentations by CCP developers, roundtable discussions, a silent auction and more.

The announcement comes only two days after the mysterious destruction of more than 67,000 ships in the crowded trading hub of Jita on June 7. Massively.com says no explanation for the event has been given by CCP staff, and EVE in-game news correspondents have also either declined or been unable to report on the event. While a “map glitch” is said to be the most likely cause, many rumors are suggesting the event is tied to the upcoming factional warfare that will engulf the game following the release of the EVE Online: Empyrean Age expansion, which will implement a significant new focus on military aspects of the game.

The EVE Online: Empyrean Age update is set to launch on June 10. For more information about EVE Fanfest 2008 as it’s released, keep an eye on the official EVE Online website.
