Al Gore, the “inventor” of the Internet is backing the creation of a new domain name for ecologically friendly sites.

The new domain name, .eco, will be used to host sites that support enviromental causes.

Dot Eco, the firm founding the idea, has applied to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to make the .eco domains viable by late 2009.

“We fully support Dot Eco in its efforts to secure the .eco top level domain through the ICANN application and look forward to working with them to promote .eco,” said former vice president Al Gore, “This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the internet as a whole.”

The firm also hopes to channel all the revenues from registration into researching climate change as well as other issues resulting from environmental conditions.
