Activision Announces Modern Warfare 2UPDATED

Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward’s next turn at the Call of Duty wheel, will hit store shelves in November of this year.

Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has been tremendously successful, becoming the top-selling release of 2007 despite not coming out until November of that year and has sold more than 12 million copies to date. The next entry in the franchise was developed by Treyarch, who once again went back to the Second World War well for Call of Duty: World at War, but Activision has now confirmed that the follow-up release will be a new Modern Warfare.

“Everyone on the team is laser focused on making the most gripping experience we’ve ever created,” said Infinity Ward CEO Vince Zampella. “No detail is too small and every finishing touch imaginable is underway to make Modern Warfare 2 our best ever. We can’t wait for our fans around the world to play starting November 10th.”

One can only wonder how the numbering system is going to work with this one. Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2? Or will Activision follow the World at War trend and forgo the Call of Duty sequel number altogether? I suppose Call of Duty 6² might work but that would lead to no end of confusion when Call of Duty 36 is released. We’ll have to see how that plays out.

Modern Warfare 2, as mentioned, is scheduled for release on November 10. In the meantime, more information, which at this point consists of a wholly uninformative trailer, is available at modernwarfare2.com. Well, not entirely uninformative; I’m pretty sure I saw the Cristo Redentor on Corcovado in there…

UPDATE: So much for Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2. VG247 reports that Activision has dropped the Call of Duty part of the title completely. The sequel will be called simply Modern Warfare 2.
