Busting Ghosts Now A Sony-Only Activity

In a surprise move, Sony have picked up the publishing rights for Terminal Reality’s Ghostbusters game in the PAL territories.

If you live in Europe and were looking forward to upping your gamerscore while catching ghosts, you’ve unknowingly set yourself up for a big disappointment as Atari passed the publishing torch for Ghostbusters over to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in a surprise 11th-hour deal.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.Biz, Atari’s CEO and President Jim Wilson said “We assessed the situation of the Ghostbusters franchise in Europe and saw that a united partnership with Sony was the best approach to maximize the long-term value of the franchise. We have an opportunity here to have first-party support behind such a significant franchise and the opportunity to then go back and publish the other SKUs later on.”

It’s not clear exactly how much later ‘later on’ actually is, although Wilson denies that the move was due to a lack of money on Atari’s part and also states that the success of the Sony versions, which include a PSP version later in the year, will not affect the game’s releases on other platforms. This deal comes not longer after Sony called Microsoft out for paying for exclusive content, and while it would be unfair to load all the blame onto Sony, it does make their accusations ring somewhat hollow.

Oh, if you live in the US, ignore the entirety of the preceding article, as Ghostbusters is getting a multi-platform release as planned on June 16th.
