Porn king Steven Hirsch says he wants Sony to allow the distribution of adult movies over the PlayStation 3 on a worldwide basis.
DDM.tv announced in August that it was set to begin offering on-demand Blu-ray-quality adult films to PlayStation 3 owners in Japan, letting them search the DDM.tv website for specific keywords, genres and actresses, pay a fee and then download the movies to their consoles. It’s a system that Hirsch, the founder and co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment, the world’s largest porn producer, would like to see spread around the world.
“[DDM’s launch] is a good start. We hope that Sony will allow adult movies to be downloaded worldwide,” he said. “As long as proper age verification is in place there is no reason why consumers should not be allowed to view adult movies on any device that they desire.”
Although Vivid hasn’t yet formally contacted Sony with its proposition, Hirsch believes that it could be very lucrative form of distribution. “It’s too early to say to what extent this could help our business, but it certainly has real potential,” he added.
It seems like a no-brainer on the surface, but would a porn-capable PS3 really fly in North America? The adult film industry is a huge money maker but the idea of on-demand porn available through a device that in the eyes of many is still a toy for kids would no doubt be met with howls of protest from legions of outraged, if not entirely informed, parents. Are we ready for a PlayStation 3 that really does everything?
