Friends may not let friends drive drunk, but screwing them around with an elaborate Rickroll involving their new copy of Modern Warfare 2? That’s a whole ‘nother matter entirely.
Up here in the Great White North, the winters are long, cold and dark, leaving us with plenty of time to cook up twisted schemes with which to amuse ourselves. Such is the case with these two fine young lads, one of whom ordered a copy of Modern Warfare 2 from Amazon while the other embarked upon a more sinister mission.
The Rickroll itself is remarkably creative; the only downside is the initially tepid response of the victim, who amazingly seems to have no idea who Rick Astley is. On the other hand, there’s a certain degree of hilarity in the fact that he appears to genuinely like the song – he lets it play throughout, even as he logs onto Facebook to post a complaint about the mixup – leading his friend to make the brilliant comment, “I didn’t know you listened to this kind of music. I would’ve brought over a Huey Lewis and the News CD.”
The slow-burn reaction of the disappointed Modern Warfare 2 fan leads me to wonder if perhaps he’s a little more “altered” than the beer bottles on the coffee table would suggest. Whatever the case, this is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in ages: I have to throw a big thumbs-up to the mastermind of the prank, not just for his imagination but for his ability to keep a straight face while telling his friend that it happened to him once too, when he got a copy of Grand Theft Auto that had PaRappa the Rapper on the disc. Well played, sir. Well played.
