Zack Snyder Directing Next Superman Movie

Zack Snyder, director of 300 and The Watchmen, is directing the next Superman film.

Rejoice! After the disappointment that was Superman Returns, the future of a rebooted series featuring everyone’s favorite caped crusader was not certain. Christopher Nolan, of Batman Begins fame, was set to produce the next film and he said that he was writing the script with his brother as of last week. Several directors expressed interest in the new project including Darren Aronofsky, Ben Affleck, Matt Reeves, Tony Scott and even Robert Zemeckis. But according to the Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder won the post.

Snyder has become somewhat of a darling director for Warner Brothers after he scored a surprise hit with the adaptation of Frank Miller’s 300 back in 2007. The Watchmen film adaptation didn’t do too bad either, and he is now in post-production on his first original film, Suckerpunch. Snyder’s first animated feature is in theaters now: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.

The hiring of Snyder means that production can move forward and we may get a new Superman film by 2012. In order for Warner Brothers to keep the rights to the character, there must be a new film in production by 2011 or the rights revert back to the estates of the original creators, Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel.

David Goyer (TV’s FlashForward) is penning the script with the Nolans. There is no word on the exact plot but we do know one very important detail: the main antagonist will be General Zod.

Come, son of Jor-El, kneel before Zod! (snootchie, bootchies, ha ha ha)
