Hugh Jackman Promises Meatier, Thought-Provoking Wolverine Sequel

Wolverine 2 will be dark, says star Hugh Jackman, but ever so good.

There’s been quite a few X-Men movies, some great, and others, well, much less great. But Jackman, who rose to fame playing the metal-boned, claw-handed Canadian hero Wolverine, is confident that the follow up to last year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine will be the best of the bunch.

Darren Aronofsky – who has worked with Jackman in the past on sci-fi drama The Fountain – has signed on to direct the film, and while Aronofsky’s work is often characterized as being very dark, Jackman doesn’t see that as incompatible with an action movie, especially not one featuring Wolverine. He thinks that Aronofsky’s directing, combined with the script from Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, will make for a film that will give people something to think about as they leave the theater.

“This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It’s going to be the best one, I hope,” he said, “Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different.”

The next Wolverine movie will be set in Japan, and will focus on the relationship between Logan and Mariko Yashida, the daughter of a Japanese crime boss. It’s a story that will be familiar to many comic book fans – and is considered one of Wolverine’s defining tales – but will be new to most moviegoers. Filming is scheduled to begin next March.
