Help Minecraft Look Better By Entering Texture Contest

The creator of Minecraft and Swedish website Webhallen are holding a contest to see who can design the best in-game textures.

Minecraft is tons of fun for the kind of gamer that likes to build and explore, but one definitely can’t say it looks amazing. The old-school pixelated graphics are a part of the charm, sure, but now you have the chance to improve them with your artistic ability. And while you’re at it, you could win some sweet components for your PC. Webhallen.com in cooperation with Notch, creator of Minecraft, are asking for submissions of custom-made textures for use in the game. The catch is that the textures must be a standard size of 16 x 16 pixels. The contest runs until December 20th so you have some time to design your little masterpiece.

Minecraft will officially allow the use of texture packs in an upcoming patch,” the announcement reads. “Webhallen and Notch are excited to see what you can bring to the table.”

The winner, judged to be the best presumably by Notch, will receive 180 GB OCZ Solid State Drive etched with Notch’s signature, which is not only awesome for the collectible-ness of it, but a pretty sweet deal as SSDs of that size can be pricey. The winner will also get a signed Minecraft-themed painting by Kristoffer Zetterstrand, whose artwork is just stunning, like this painting depicting a Minecraft match. Even the second and third place winners will get some smaller SSDs also signed by Notch.

Get out your digital paint pen and start putting pixels together. Not only will you help make Minecraft better, but you could nab some sweet loot, too.

Enter the contest and find out more details at Webhallen.com.
