Legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu is teaming up with the original Final Fantasy creator for a game with a title eerily similar to “Final Fantasy.”
When we first caught glimpses of Mistwalker’s The Last Story – a Wii-exclusive JRPG headed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi – in action, sharp-eyed (or rather, sharp-eared?) gamers noticed that the music sounded somewhat familiar. While the composer in question hadn’t been announced, many hypothesized that it might be Nobuo Uematsu, a renowned game composer best known for his work on the Final Fantasy series.
If you were one of those gamers, give yourself a gold star.
Uematsu is indeed the composer for The Last Story, a project that sees him teaming up with his old Final Fantasy pal Sakaguchi for the first time since 2007’s Lost Odyssey. Okay, okay, that isn’t actually that long a time, but it’s the principle of the thing.
Anyone who picks up a first edition copy of the game when it hits shelves in Japan this January will receive a free mini soundtrack CD along with your game. Considering Uematsu is one of the biggest musical names in the business, that’s probably a neat little bonus for most people. Sadly, there’s no release date here in the West yet.
So it’s a game helmed by the original creator of Final Fantasy with a soundtrack composed by the iconic Final Fantasy composer and a title that sounds like someone took “Final Fantasy” and just opened up a thesaurus. Judging from the little we’ve seen, though, it actually doesn’t look much like a Final Fantasy title, though. What strange wonders will we see next?
