New CryEngine 3 Trailer Shows How the Next Generation Could Look

Are you ready for more mind-blowing visuals from those dark sorcerers at CryTek? I hope you are.

Last time we took a good long look at what was possible with CryTek’s CryEngine 3, it was a year and a half ago. The latest demo video released at GDC looks just as shiny, if not even more so.

While there’s still undoubtedly some power left to harness in the PS3 and Xbox 360 (the former more than the latter), it’s things like this video that demonstrate where games could be headed visually after this console generation has run its course. I’m usually not a graphics snob who demands that every game have the newest bump-definition-ray-snorfling or whatever, but there’s definitely something to be said for this level of sheer visual splendor.

Obviously this video, having premiered at GDC, is aimed at other development studios, in order to convince them to license the engine for their own projects. I don’t really understand what “fully linear lighting pipeline” and “3D LUT support” mean, but I don’t need to. All I need to do is look at the shiny, shiny cars. Boy, are they shiny.

Now to find a machine capable of running this engine on full specs. I just need to build a time machine first, to snatch it from the future.

(Thanks, Alai!)
