Atlus’ Catherine Becomes a Franchise

After strong Japanese sales, Catherine has become more than just a unique PS3/Xbox 360 game.

Atlus’ Catherine is currently only available in Japan, but that hasn’t stopped other regions from overflowing with anticipation for the game. This may or may not have something to do with boobs and the game’s apparent weirdness. Now fans have even more Catherine goodness to look forward to, as Atlus parent company Index Holdings has announced that Catherine is a new franchise.

This aligns Catherine with other Atlus properties such as Shin Megami Tensei. If you’re like me, you instantly began wondering when this will translate into sheep-man plushies.

Catherine was released in Japan on February 17, 2011, and has since beaten sales expectations with 250,000 copies sold in the region alone. Index Holdings wants to capitalize on this popularity. A Catherine novel is in the works, while an anime would also seem to fit the property well. New Catherine games have not been mentioned yet.

Catherine is coming to North America for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in summer 2011, so we can probably expect some measure of the franchise’s other elements to also cross overseas. That seems like a good thing, but going by some of Catherine‘s trailers, it might be responsible for widespread nightmares too.
