The developer made some tweaks to the console version which caters to the strengths of Sony’s handheld.

The PS Vita may not be a hit in Japan, but Sony still has high hopes for when the new handheld debuts overseas this February. Warner Bros. Interactive announced today that it is bringing the esteemed fighter series to the PS Vita this Spring, adding to Sony’s already impressive lineup of launch or near-launch titles. And not only will the 2D fighter bring the terrible x-ray shots of breaking limbs to your hands, but Warner Bros. promises special features and content tailored specifically for the Vita. The only problem is we’ll have to wait to hear exactly what those special features are.

“The NetherRealm team is committed to making sure that we follow up the success of 2011’s Mortal Kombat with an equally compelling experience on the PlayStation Vita,” said Ed Boon, head of Creative at NetherRealm Studios and co-creator of the original Mortal Kombat from 1992. “The original game content and new features we developed for the PlayStation Vita will provide gamers with the best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform.”

Guessing what those features will be is pretty easy. A handheld fighter with access to the internet and GPS would be perfect for beating some Raiden ass. What if you could see if anyone was playing near you and challenge them to a match?

That might even be worth buying a Vita … ah, who am I kidding?
