Tomb Raider Sequel May Already Be in Pre-Production

Crystal Dynamics has the future of the Lara Croft franchise all mapped out.

With nine months left before the new Tomb Raider reboot hits shelves, we’re seeing hints that Crystal Dynamics is already planning the future of the franchise. During an interview with Videogamer.com, Global Brand Director Karl Stewart hinted that, while the current game explains how Lara Croft became the adventurer fans know and love, a new game detailing what happens next may already be in the works.

“I have to be careful because I know exactly where she’s going,” Stewart said. “It’s not just one game… At the end of this game we want her to be that strong female character that is willing to go and seek out mysteries and seek out tombs. She’s going to be going to plenty of tombs in this game, but we’re going to have somebody who wants to go on that adventure, who wants to be the person that she now is. That’s the goal.”

When pressed for details, Stewart insisted he couldn’t share anything further. “I don’t want to say anymore on it because I’ll have the game director of the next game going ‘what the fuck are you saying!?'”

Unfortunately for Stewart, simply saying that a director exists at all may have been too much. Crystal Dynamics is currently rumored to be working on two new games; the first is a new IP for the upcoming console generation, while the second is a top-secret title led by former God of War director Cory Barlog. Barlog’s experience in third-person action games rooted in history and ancient cultures would be a natural fit for the Tomb Raider franchise.

If a Tomb Raider sequel is underway, it would be in the pre-production phase at best, so it will be some time before more details come to light. In the meantime, the Tomb Raider reboot will arrive on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC platforms on March 5th.
