Mojang’s cult-classic-turned-mainstream-hit just keeps selling.
Minecraft has been around for a while now, and with versions popping up for everything from XBLA to smartphones, you might think just about everyone already owns one version or another. Not so, according to creator Markus Persson, aka “Notch.” In a recent tweet, Perrson revealed that a whopping 453,000 copies of the game were sold on December 24 alone.
Half a million copies of a game isn’t a particularly mind-blowing number, at least when it comes to new titles, but Minecraft isn’t exactly fresh on the gaming scene. Details regarding which platforms were the top sellers during the holiday hot streak weren’t offered, so it’s impossible to pinpoint where the bulk of the sales came from.
According to the official website, a total of 8,714,254 people have purchased the PC version of the game, with over 17,000 of those sales coming in the last 24 hours. Recently, developer Mojang revealed that the pocket edition for iOS and Android devices passed 5 million sales on its own, showing that love for the blocky building adventure isn’t slowing down.
