In support of Prevention to Cruelty of Animals Month, the Uncharted 3 multiplayer servers are going to get a lot furrier.
Naughty Dog has thrown a lot of support into Uncharted 3‘s free-to-play multiplayer component with a steady stream of updates. The latest batch of content isn’t your typical collection of guns and accessories, though: in the spirit of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, the PlayStation store will be stocked with a variety of animal-themed costume pieces and gear. Profits from the sales of these items will go towards an assortment of animal charities.
At the heart of this promotion are two of the original Naughty Dogs: Pogo, who belongs to company co-president Evan Wells, and Trumpet, who is owned by Naughty Dog president Christophe Balestra. Both pets have been immortalized on in-game T-shirts and weapon skins, allowing players to pledge allegiance to Team Pogo or Team Trumpet (presumably by virtue of the respective champion’s cuteness). In addition, a collection of animal head masks are available for purchase, ranging from eagles to octopi. This month’s Tournament Reward items are also getting in on the theme, from a Raptor Mask platinum prize to the new Croc Gun (which I’m told is an assault rifle and, sadly, not a tool for firing live crocodiles at your enemies).
These customization items will be available until the end of April. It’s nice to see a developer raising funds for a good cause, and Uncharted players are bound to have an interesting month of multiplayer as these masks fill the servers. Still, it’s more than a little strange that an event opposing animal cruelty revolves around the ability to headshot giraffes and pandas instead of human mercenaries. It might be best not to think too hard about the implications there.
