Assassin’s Creed IV Trailer Features Grog, Violence

Watch filthy pirates murder upstanding seamen in this new Assassin’s Creed IV trailer

The new, pre-rendered Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag trailer Ubisoft just revealed at E3 is light on the scurvy, but thankfully heavy on the other two staples of pirate life: grog and violence.

“During the two years of development, we researched the era, and understood why pirates make everyone so excited,” said executive producer, Jean Guesdon. “It’s because they’re the perfect symbol of freedom, rebellion and adventure.”

It appears Guesdon is a student of the Pirates of the Caribbean school of early modern history. I’d argue pirates are actually the perfect symbol of murder, rape, pillage and scurvy, but I get that wouldn’t make for a compelling protagonist.

“These men and women were ready to die young in order to live their own life,” Guesdon continued.

Guesdon’s short speech was followed by what passes for “in-game” footage in Ubisoft land; Slow pans across majestic vistas and choreographed action set to haunting music. Essentially, it’s the same trailer that’s accompanied every Assassin’s Creed game. We’ll stick it below once one of the Escapist tech gremlins figures out how to steal it from YouTube.

Black Flag tells the story of British pirate, Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway and grandfather of Connor, the protagonists of Assassin’s Creed III.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is set for release on PS3, PC, Xbox 360 and Wii U on the 29th of October in the US. Australian and European releases are to follow on October 31st and November 1st respectively.
