The latest patch for Starbound has introduced a new system that will preserve characters and ships in future updates.
Fans of Chucklefish’s long-awaited “Terraria-in-space” open-world game Starbound were beyond ecstatic when the beta dropped late last year. They were less ecstatic to find out that their characters and ships would be wiped every time an update to the beta was rolled out. But, you should be ecstatic once more, as the latest patch to the beta has ensured that any future patches will no longer wipe characters or ships (though they may still wipe worlds). Hooray!
The patch features “Absolutely massive changes to disk serialization (sorry reversers), which will allow us to never need to wipe players or ships again, and hopefully never need to wipe worlds again,” as well as a wealth of bug fixes and new features, including:
- Difficulty levels and permadeath
- New techs
- The new “Savannah” biome
- New objects
- New items
- New enemy attacks
- Random encounters

Starbound has managed to sell over a million copies despite still being in the first stage of its Beta, and has already had someone put together a rather impressive Mass Effect mod.
