The Wii U gamepad is great for shooters, apparently.
By the way, the Wii U launches later this month, November 18th to be exact. After a big presence at E3 this summer and a few more details this Fall, we’ve been neck-deep in games like Dishonored, XCOM, and Halo 4 to think about Nintendo’s impending console. Well, that hasn’t stopped the head of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, talking about how the Wii U and its nifty gamepad with embedded touchscreen is exactly the kind of control system needed for modern shooters.
“This is the best controller Nintendo’s ever made for making an FPS,” Pitchford said at New York Comic Con when discussing how the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines will use the Wii U. “This is the best controller Nintendo has ever given us for playing hardcore games.”
Sony and Microsoft might have something similar down the pipe with initiatives like SmartGlass, but Pitchford said Nintendo is the only hardware-maker that’s all in with this technology. “With the Wii U [Nintendo] committed themselves to this promise. So the link is direct, fast and immediate,” he said. “Things like SmartGlass and Vita, they appreciate the value of the promise so they’re making the promise. But they’re not in with such commitment.”
Pitchford acknowledged Gearbox may try to use the Vita or Smartglass in Aliens: Colonial Marines, but the Nintendo version will features like a motion tracker and in-game map on the Wii U gamepad out of the box. “Conceivably there’s things you can do on all three without negative impact but because of Nintendo’s commitment to it there are something’s that could work there that just wouldn’t work as well with SmartGlass or with the crossplay between PS3 and Vita.”
I guess we’ll see what happens when the Wii U comes out on November 18th, and when Aliens releases within the fuzzy “launch window” Nintendo says will last several months.
