Lord of the Rings MMORPG Coming from Amazon Game Studios, Leyou

Amazon Game Studios, in partnership with Leyou Technologies, has revealed it has plans to develop a “AAA” Lord of the Rings MMORPG.

The title will be free to play with plans to release on both PC and consoles. As noted by The Verge, Leyou’s game development studio Athlon Games actually revealed most of the game’s details last year.

This new Lord of the Rings MMORPG will take place “long before” J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and will feature “lands, people, and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.”

Leyou also owns developer Digital Extremes, which is best known for its work on the ever-growing Warframe series. If Leyou’s ownership paired with the help of Athlon and Amazon Game Studios is anything to go by, the Lord of the Rings franchise will be in safe hands.

Amazon also recently revealed that it has plans to launch a Lord of the Rings TV series, though they added that this new game and show are unrelated to one another.

In other Lord of the Rings news, Daedalic Entertainment said it was developing a game based on Gollum, a series favorite. The game is supposedly the first of many as part of a deal Daedalic has with the Lord of the Rings IP owner, Middle-earth Enterprises.

The Lord of the Rings MMORPG has no release date yet, so stay tuned for more updates.
